The institution, in a statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, yesterday announced his death.
The institution said Marafa was said to have been shot while returning from Gusau but did not say where the event happened or give more details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Vise Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) announces the tragic and untimely death of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa’, the statement read.
The university hailed Marafa as a “dedicated and committed staff member” who worked for the university in numerous responsible positions throughout his career.
It stated he was named Bursar of the institution in September 2026, and took up his appointment with “a strong sense of duty and commitment to the advancement of the University.”
His death has put the university community into sadness and his passing is a “profound loss” to the institution, NOUN said.
The statement released on the school’s X account read: “The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family.
The institution expressed its condolences to the immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and those who have been affected by his passing.
The family said further details about his funeral arrangements will be disclosed when they were available.
As of this report, no more facts were available about the circumstances of the shooting.
