The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), has scored a key milestone with the introduction of In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment providing to rekindle dreams of childless couples.
A team of the hospital’s assisted reproductive health technology and others documented the milestone, reports say.
This was reported by the Chief Consultant Gynaecologist and IVF Specialist at AKTH, Ibrahim Rais in a video posted on the hospital’s official Facebook page.
The team has gathered eggs from two women and semen samples from their husbands for the next step of the IVF treatment, Rais added.
“Today marks a very great milestone in the history of AKTH and the IVF service provision in the institution. “The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Abdulrahman Sheshe and his team have been working assiduously and today we have achieved this great milestone of the first egg collection in this institution.
“We’ve taken eggs from two women and we also took semen samples from their husbands. We hope to get success with fertilisation of eggs gathered by their spouses sperm.
“We are going to continue the service provision with three more patients and then we cap it up on Sunday with the last patient,” he said.
Rais stated the launch of the program shall bring the service close to the teeming people and renew hope amongst couples suffering from infertility to bear a child.
“It is also important to note that the commencement of IVF services in AKTH has been a very important development because the center will become one of the points for service provision to the teeming population needing IVF services.
“It will be a center of excellence for training in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive medicine. We’ve got out more than a dozen eggs so far. Embryologists are putting forth a lot of effort to make sure that the individuals who have the operation are fertilised by their own sperm.
“We will continue to get more eggs that will produce more embryos and translate to potentially more Nigerians,” said Rais. Africans and diaspora
The hospital also said in a statement on its official handle that the feat was achieved by the combined efforts of the AKTH personnel, professional reproductive health experts from Jos and Abuja and two embryologists.
It said the development was an important step in providing sophisticated fertility services and bringing hope closer to communities.
In the meantime, the hospital commended the entire team of the AKTH for the remarkable feat.
