Minister of Works David Umahi has spoken out about the death of a nurse, Mary Habila, in his hometown compound in Ebonyi State, characterising her as “a good nurse” and disputing social media allegations alleging concealment surrounding the tragedy.
Umahi also declared that he had directed his lawyers to start legal action against persons disseminating what he described as false and defamatory reports regarding the circumstances of her death, reports Daily Trust.
While reviewing the ongoing work on the Ebonyi segment of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Super Highway, the minister who was speaking, criticised what he described as the activities of “evil people who claim to be freedom fighters” and insisted that disinformation should not be accepted.
He said the nurse’s family got frightened when they could not reach her and broke open the door to her room and promptly sought medical care.
“The family broke the girl’s door, called doctors from DUFUTH who took her to hospital and did everything to revive her but failed,” Umahi added. Administration
The incident was reported to authorities immediately, he said, dismissing suggestions that the circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death were being covered up.
“The family went to the police, where is the secrecy?” he said.
Umahi said the parents of the deceased are in Ebonyi State and they would address journalists on the topic and take legal action against anyone spreading what he called false information.
The minister also said that he has ordered an autopsy to know what caused his death and that the autopsy would be done only with the approval of the parents of the deceased.
“You don’t do content creation with someone’s death,” he stated. “The purveyors of such falsehood will die a worse death. Death & Tragedy
Paying tribute to the late nurse, Umahi hailed her as a dedicated staff of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), stating that she had worked closely with him for three years.
“The deceased was a good nurse who worked with me for three years and took my medical vital signs,” he stated.
The minister also seized the occasion to deny reports linking him to a suspect arrested in connection with an alleged kidnap case, who was believed to have been recruited into Ebonyi security group, Ebubeagu.
He disputed those claiming to produce evidence tying him with the suspect.
“Can the purveyors of such news produce a photograph of me and such a person?” he enquired.
Umahi said it was impossible for him to know every person hired into the security agency during his tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State, adding that he had no relationship with the suspect.
He reiterated his stance against insecurity and stated that he was in support of severe punishment for kidnappers, calling it as a crime that no one should wish for even his enemy.
He claimed the allegations against him were politically motivated and vowed to fight to clear his name through legal methods.
