A female student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) merely known as Ademola has stated that a soldier attempted to rape her during the reported invasion of student hostels by soldiers of the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo.
The claim was made in a video doing the rounds online in which the student detailed her experience during the incident which apparently happened on Monday evening, says Daily Trust.
Ademola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she was in her hostel room alone preparing a supper when she saw soldiers surrounding the hostel premises. “The situation seemed to have calmed down at first before the soldiers allegedly came back and started knocking on doors,” she claimed.
Soldiers shined headlights into her room and asked who was there, she said, and then told her to open the door.
They shone their torch into my chamber and enquired who was in there. “They told me to open the door and I opened the door,” she added.
One soldier asked how many individuals were in the room, the student recalled. She said she had a housemate who was out.
The soldier then became hostile, grabbed her and pushed her against the restroom door, Ademola said.
He put me up against my bathroom door and said I was going to like it. And he told me not to shout. “I kept questioning him,” she said.
She stated she had a hard time trying to get away and went for the door of the room, imploring the soldier repeatedly to leave.
Another soldier came into the room later and tried to calm her down, urging her not to scream, she said.
“They kept telling me to calm down, that I would enjoy it. “I just started yelling and screaming and that is when they both left the room,” she said.
The student said she shut the door soon after the troops left, adding that one of her hostel mates came later to check on her after hearing her screams.
The claim comes as it was reported that soldiers assigned to the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, attacked various student dorms on Monday night, during which students alleged they were abused and their valuables were taken away.
More than 60 mobile phones and other valuables were confiscated during the search, students said. Some female students also said that they were stripped naked and made to dance unclothed by some of the troops who were said to be among the personnel who took part in the passing-out parade of the Army Depot held last Saturday.
In response to the claims yesterday, the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, said it had initiated investigation following a petition by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D.
The Army said the investigation was to establish the facts surrounding the incident and assured the public that any personnel found culpable would be subjected to appropriate disciplinary action under the military law.
