Super Falcons produced a commanding second half performance yesterday to beat Teranga Lionesses of Senegal 3-0 in the second of their two international friendly games at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State.
The Falcons rediscovered their feet to claim a convincing win in front of their home supporters after a tense and scoreless first half, Daily Trust reported.
The game started with energy as Nigeria won an early set-piece which was taken by captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the opening minute but the opportunity was wasted.
The Super Falcons kept up the pressure and forward Joy Omewa came very close to another opportunity moments later.
The initial phase was characterised by persistent domination, but the deadlock remained unbroken.
Falcons had another chance to score in the 13th minute but failed to capitalise, sending a shot wide when the goal was there for the taking.
Gift Monday was always a threat and troubled the Senegalese defence on several occasions as the home crowd roared on the team.
The first half ended 0-0 and Omewa came agonisingly near in the 15th minute as she circled the custodian only for her shot to strike the woodwork.
The breakthrough finally came three minutes into the second half. Nigeria deservedly took the lead in the 48th minute when a well placed cross from Shukurat Oladipo was met by a header from Joy Omewa.
The opener lifted them and they increased in confidence and control. In the 55th minute, Omewa doubled the lead with a powerful run through the Teranga Lionesses’ backline before slotting home with composure for her second of the game.
The Falcons’ dominance was further emphasised in the 66th minute when Captain Rasheedat Ajibade went on a charging run and threw on an assist for substitute Asisat Oshoala who had replaced Omewa to slot home and make it 3-0.
The result puts a fitting end to a superb effort by the Super Falcons, who converted their second half domination into goals and were defensively sound throughout.
