Following the death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, new details have emerged. His family has confirmed that the late star was secretly married and before his death, he had a child. He died at the age of 40 at Evercare Hospital in Lagos on May 11, 2026, following a battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The late actor was characterized as a “beloved husband, son, brother and friend,” in a statement provided by his family, a phrase that for the first time officially disclosed Ekubo had a wife. The description implied that he had quietly created a family life away from the glare of publicity before his death.
The actor never revealed any marriage or child publicly during his years in the entertainment world and the news came as a shock to many of his colleagues and admirers. Some close colleagues said they knew nothing of his purported marriage or fatherhood, saying he kept such matters exclusively inside family circles.
Fellow actor, Williams Uchemba commented on the discovery in a recent interview, “Alex was married before he passed away but I don’t want to go into full details. I think it should be the family releasing it to the public. I’ll let his immediate family put out as far as if he had a child. “I will respect his wishes for privacy of life”.
The desire to keep his family life private was apparently spurred by the sad breakup of his highly publicised engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu in 2021. That broken engagement made entertainment news and put him in the public eye and on social media blast
Sources within his professional circle said the incident was a factor in his decision to keep personal issues out of public conversation. His desire for solitude was also influenced by a wish to shield his family from online harassment and constant conjecture about his personal life.
Actor Grace Makun also indicated his marital status as he wrote in tribute “Your guys are not ok o Ikuku, your parents, siblings, wife, your gang, your colleagues, fans ahhhhh” . The actor had been mostly out in the public eye and off social media since December 2024.
Funeral plans are underway and the family has asked for privacy with rumors suggesting he may be buried in two weeks. “What Alex has achieved in 40 years some 90 years old have not achieved it,” Williams Uchemba noted. He tried to not allow bad things get to him.
