Counter-terrorism police in London are investigating a suspected arson attack at a former synagogue amid growing worries over a surge in antisemitic events throughout the UK.
Several reports say emergency personnel attended a fire at the unused religious institution which caused obvious damage to areas of the structure. There were no reports of injuries, but the event, which officials say may be linked to hate-motivated violence, has spurred a counterterrorism-led investigation.
Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police Service are at the scene and conducting inquiries including any probable accelerants used to start the blaze. Investigators also are looking into whether the attack was intentionally aimed because of the building’s historic ties to the Jewish community.
There have been no arrests declared by officials, but security has been increased in the area as a precaution. Community leaders have voiced worry over the event, calling it part of a larger pattern of intolerance against Jewish institutions.”
Antisemitic incidents in the UK have risen dramatically in recent years, with advocacy organizations warning that geopolitical tensions and online misinformation are driving the trend. Authorities say they are taking all such events seriously, particularly those involving houses of worship or with potential terror implications.
Police said the investigation is continuing and appealed for assistance from the public in a bid to uncover the purpose behind the attack.
