Former Anambra State governor and leading presidential aspirant on the platform of the Action Democratic Party (ADC), Peter Obi, has disclosed his recent closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying it was part of wider consultations to shape the future of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a member of the visiting team of eminent South-East leaders, said the tour was to proffer sustainable solutions to the country’s mounting issues and map a new course for the nation’s growth.
He said the discussions with Jonathan were candid, thoughtful and centered on the need to reorient Nigeria towards unity, security, stability, productivity and inclusive governance.
“Leaders across regions coming together, reflecting, consulting and acting in the overall interest of the Nigerian people has become imperative at a time our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity and deepening social divisions,” Obi said.
Nigeria’s leadership must be based on competence, integrity, capacity and compassion, not personal ambition or political expediency, he said.
The former presidential candidate of Labour Party also claimed that administration should not be limited to the sharing of finite resources but rather create possibilities, enhance productivity and move Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one.
Obi said the 2027 general elections would be a defining moment for national rebirth, adding that the exercise must go beyond politics to address the actual concerns of ordinary Nigerians.
He said national conversations before the polls should focus on quality education, economic possibilities, young empowerment and greater security.
“The future of the country is in the hands of leaders who are ready to put the national interest before their personal interest and work together across political and regional divides,” he said.
Obi was optimistic about Nigeria’s future, stating that only true conversation, togetherness and willingness to do what is right remains the key to overcome the nation’s present issues.
The gathering has continued to draw political interest as consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential contest gain traction across the country.
