Police stated yesterday that they had arrested a 31-year-old Nigerian man for reportedly planning to kidnap his aunt, the woman who nurtured him for ten years.
According to police spokesperson Bright Edafe, the Delta State Police Command arrested the suspect, Chukwemeka Destiny, after he paid ₦900,000 to people he thought were kidnappers.
According to Sunday Guardian, Edafe revealed that the payments were made in two parts: a ₦200,000 deposit and then a ₦700,000 payment. This was part of a scheme to kidnap the woman who had taken care of Destiny from the age of five to fifteen.
Edafe claimed, “He didn’t know that the people he talked to weren’t kidnappers.”
“They used him as bait, got him to come to them, and then gave him to the police, saving his aunt’s life.”
Police say that Destiny lived with his aunt when he was growing up, but he eventually left the residence and reportedly stopped talking to his relatives.
Edafe claimed that “all of a sudden, something came to his mind that he should kidnap his aunt who trained him and saw him through school.” He called the episode part of a worrying pattern of violence against benefactors.
Destiny admitted to being involved when asked, but he couldn’t say why.
“I really am guilty of what happened.” He answered, “I don’t know what came over me,” and then he stated that the money for the land came from his business moving and building materials.
The aunt, who is Destiny’s mother’s older sister, claimed she was horrified when she heard about the plan and had a hard time controlling her feelings.
“I was shocked and crying,” she stated. When asked if she would rather be lenient, she said that the law should take its course.
Police say that the suspect is in jail right now and that the investigation is still going on.
