The agency said in a statement that it is working with the Metropolitan Police Department to find out what happened. The event happened close to a security screening area, according to AFP.
The incident happened near the main magnetometer checkpoint where tourists are screened, which made police officers on duty respond right away.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service, stated on its X handle today that everyone who was protected, including the president and first lady, was safe after the event.
Authorities are still checking on the people involved, but one suspect is now in jail.
Guglielmi added that teams are on the ground looking into things and gathering information. He also indicated that additional information will be given when it becomes available.
“We will provide you updates as they come in and verify the information. Our teams are on the ground looking into the situation and figuring out what’s going on. He also said, “All of our protectees are safe.”
The tragedy has made people even more worried about safety at big public events in Washington, D.C., and officials are expected to look over their procedures as the probe goes on.
