Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, has approved a one-day-a-week off-duty schedule for public personnel, along with a ₦10,000 transportation stipend for three months starting this month.
The State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, said in a statement that the action is meant to help the state’s workers after the rise in fuel prices and its effects on transportation and the expense of life.
He stated, “The government’s gesture is meant to make things even easier for workers, who now have to deal with more problems getting to work.”
Onasanya said that the program is meant to help people in a real way as fuel prices rise, and it will also improve service by making workers more motivated and energized.
He said that workers who have to do important tasks, like doctors, judges, teachers and non-teachers in primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, security guards, accountants, heads of departments in different MDAs, and officers who get extra pay because they have to be there in person for extra duties, are not included in the one-day-off arrangement.
But he said that they will still get the ₦10,000 special transport allowance.
He stated, “The accounting officers of each ministry, department, and agency will decide on the specific day that each eligible public servant will take off work in a way that does not affect service delivery.”
Onasanya thanked the governor for what he called a timely and well-thought-out action.
He went on to say, “This measure, which shows the government’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of its workers, will bring relief to workers.”
He asked public servants to show their appreciation by being more dedicated, disciplined, and providing better service.
