Newcastle United moved on to the final 16 of the Champions League with a 3-2 win over Qarabag yesterday. They won the tie 9-3 on aggregate over the Azeri champions.
According to AFP, the Magpies will be one of six English teams in the last 16, along with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham.
Last week, a tie that required both teams to make a round trip of more than 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) was finished in 45 minutes. Newcastle led 5-0 at halftime and won 6-1.
That let Eddie Howe make a lot of changes to his team, and Anthony Gordon, who scored four goals in the first leg, was one among the players who sat on the bench.
Newcastle got off to another quick start, scoring twice in the first six minutes to extend their lead.
After Dan Burn’s effort was saved, Sandro Tonali scored the rebound. Then, Joelinton knocked in Harvey Barnes’ cross.
In the league phase, Qarabag beat Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt to get to the play-off round. They at least saved some face by scoring two goals in the second half.
Camilo Duran scored a goal to get Burn back in the game, but the Newcastle defender was called for handball in the box.
Marko Jankovic’s penalty was saved by Aaron Ramsdale, but Elvin Jafarguliyev scored the rebound.
Sven Botman scored a goal with a header from a corner in between the visitors’ two goals.
That made it 30 goals that Qarabag had given up in the Champions League, which is a record for a single season in the competition.
