Hilda Baci, a chef and holder of the Guinness World Record, has donated N2 million to organizations that aid survivors of sexual assault and to the legal battle for justice in the case of Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13-year-old girl.
According to The Nation, Ogbanje passed away in 2018 following a long period of alleged sexual assault by her guardians.
She stressed the significance of supporting surviving survivors who are still recuperating from comparable trauma by describing Ochanya as a girl who should have been safeguarded but was let down by those who were supposed to look out for her.
Baci emphasized that paying tribute to Ochanya demands more than just hashtags on social media; she urged accountability, community involvement, and financial support so that no one experiences the anguish she did.
The very persons whose job it was to keep a 13-year-old girl safe and loved ended up failing that girl.
“As I read through her story, I couldn’t help but wonder how many girls out there are still here, trying to find their way back to wholeness, carrying wounds like hers,” she said on Instagram.
After public voting, Baci declared that the donation would go to two reputable organizations that aid victims of sexual assault and other forms of violence.
I am committing two million Nigerian naira to organizations that aid victims of sexual assault and rape in support of that cause.
Please advise me on which two reliable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should receive this gift. Please submit your nominations in the space provided or use the “tag” feature below. Once we have reviewed them, someone from my staff will contact you personally.
Those who are unable to contribute monetarily are invited to lend their voices to the cause, and she also asked for contributions to a GoFundMe campaign that is currently moving the legal process forward.
Every dollar counts in the pursuit of justice and the advancement of the judicial process. Additionally, she emphasized that it is acceptable to contribute verbally even if financial support is not possible.
She explained the movement by saying that standing together for compassion and justice will help Ochanya and others going through the same thing.
Leaving a lasting tribute to her requires more than just sharing hashtags online. Making sure no one ever feels alone in their suffering again involves showing up for those who are still here, she continued.
Many people have taken to social media to express their gratitude for Baci’s openness and to demand concrete actions in response to the renewed #JusticeForOchanya movement.
