Nigerian man, Babalola, 26, gets eight years in UK for drug dealing
On Friday, May 19, 2023, police in Peterborough conducted a raid at the home of a man they later identified as Olusegun Babalola on Whitsed Street in the Eastfield neighbourhood.
Months of surveillance led police to evidence that Babalola was involved in a “county lines” operation, supplying crack and heroin in the city.
When police searched his home that morning, they discovered £7,000 worth of heroin and crack cocaine wrapped in tissue paper stashed on the countertop.
The one-bedroom flat also contained a large quantity of designer clothing and footwear, as well as various items of drug paraphernalia, such as small weighing scales and multiple mobile phones, one of which was later confirmed to be the ‘deal line’ for the county line.
On Friday, September 15, he appeared in Peterborough Crown Court, where he was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison for five counts of crack cocaine distribution, heroin distribution involvement, and crack cocaine possession with intent to distribute.
“Babalola had a considerable amount of designer goods in his possession, which was not consistent with the lifestyle of someone who claimed to not currently be employed,” said Detective Constable Olly Campbell, who conducted the investigation.
He was forced to plead guilty because “through a variety of tactics, we were able to build a significant amount of evidence to prove he was dealing drugs and played a leading role in the county lines set-up.”
Operation Tsunami, a crackdown on exploitation and illegal drugs in Peterborough, has now resulted in the sentencing of seven people, including Babalola.
As of this writing, the 48 people arrested during the enforcement phase in May have been charged with a total of 83 drug offences, and the five people sentenced have been given a combined 24 years and 11 months in prison.
