Mohamed Bazoum, the former president of the Niger Republic, claims he is being isolated and fed dry rice.

The military overthrew Bazoum and suspended the constitution on July 26, 2023.

After the expiration of the 7-day deadline set by the regional bloc for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS Chairman and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu called for a meeting to be held today.

In a series of texts to a friend, Bazoum reportedly complained that he had been “deprived of all human contact” since Friday, with no one bringing him food or medicine. CNN was cited in this report by Daily Trust.

Nigeria cut off electric power in response to the coup, and the deposed president claimed he had been without electricity for a week.

Bazoum claims that all of the fresh food he was given has since gone bad, and that he has been reduced to eating dry pasta and rice.

Bazoum, despite his isolation, has maintained connections with the outside world.

Bazoum spoke with Secretary of State Antony Blinken over the phone after being unable to meet with acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her visit to Niamey, the Nigerien capital, on Monday.

According to reports, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, met with the coup leaders in an effort to create space for negotiations.

The newspaper was informed by reliable sources that Sanusi made the trip in his personal capacity but briefed President Bola Tinubu beforehand.

Today in Abuja, ECOWAS will hold yet another meeting to discuss the coup.
