No-Man’s Land: Lagos to Enact Laws Safeguarding Indigenes
Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, made the announcement on Tuesday that the state of Lagos will be implementing laws to protect its indigenes.
Obasa, who was elected to serve as the speaker of the 10th Assembly for the third time in a row, disclosed that the legislative agenda would cover a wide range of topics, including the economy, commerce, property, titles, and the potential rollback of policies “that are reversible to safeguard the interests of the indigenes.”
Obasa emphasized that Lagos is Yoruba land while he was speaking about the controversies that surrounded the 2023 elections that were just recently concluded. These controversies included claims that non-indigenous people were attempting to take control of the state.
“Lagos is Yoruba land, contrary to the assertions of certain individuals who view it as a no man’s land,” he said. “Lagos is a no man’s land.”
“As part of our legislative agenda, we aim to ensure the translation of laws passed by this House into the Yoruba language,” Obasa continued. “This is something we intend to do to ensure that our constituents are fully protected.” “The establishment of a strong legislative framework that protects the interests of our people is the collective goal that we have set for ourselves.” Moving forward, Obasa made a commitment to support the Lagos natives by utilizing any and all legislative tools available to him.
He affirmed, “There will be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles, and we will reverse any policies that can be reversed to protect the interests of the indigenes.” These laws and resolutions will focus on the economic and commercial sectors, property and titles, respectively.
These remarks were made during his acceptance speech after he had been elected speaker of the assembly by a unanimous vote.
