Simon Maduekwe, a hypertensive patient, died as a result of the shock he received when suspected political thugs invaded his home on Fatomi Crescent, Off Bajulaiye Compound, Shomolu, Lagos State, in an attempt to apprehend a yet-to-be-identified man who was using his mobile phone to record their violent actions at one of the polling units in the area.

PUNCH During the governorship and state House of Assembly elections, residents including Maduekwe went to the polling unit to vote for their preferred candidate, according to Metro.

While voting was taking place, it was discovered that some suspected political thugs began to create tension and warned voters not to vote for anyone other than their preferred candidate.

However, after Maduekwe voted, our correspondent learned that he left the polling station for his home.

Chuka Maduekwe, Maduekwe’s son, said his father was at home when one of the political thugs spotted a resident capturing the moments on his mobile phone while subjecting some of the voters to various forms of intimidation and suppression.

Following that, the political thug raised the alarm, attracting the attention of his accomplices, and Chuka claimed they gave the resident, who was firmly clutching his phone, a hot chase.

The enraged son claimed that the unidentified resident ran into his father’s house in a desperate attempt to flee, and that thugs pursued him.

Chuka explained that Maduekwe, who was unaware of what had occurred outside his home, thought the thugs were there to attack him for voting against their preferred candidate, and that his father slumped at the sight of the hoodlums approaching him.

“My dad had gone to vote as early as 8 a.m. because the polling unit was in front of our compound on Fatomi Crescent, Off Bajulaiye Compound, Somolu, Lagos State,” he explained.

There was commotion at the polling station that morning, as suspected thugs threatened people to vote for their party and scared away those who refused. We also heard them yelling at a particular guy who was filming them.

“When they saw the guy, they chased him, and he ran right into our compound and into our apartment.” My father was standing at the door when he collapsed as the guy and the thugs ran towards him.

“We tried to revive him right away but couldn’t, so we rushed him to Somolu General Hospital, where a nurse confirmed that he was dead.” My father had high blood pressure and had not done business in over a year because we were doing everything we could to keep him alive, but he died as a result of the election incident.”

Chuka, while lamenting the incident, stated that it had traumatized his mother.

“My family has been in mourning since the incident.” “My mother is just trying to figure out what happened; we never expected that this election would take him away from us,” he explained.

Samson Duru, an eyewitness, described Maduekwe, 68, as a peaceful man who always warned youths against illegal activities during the election period, adding that the deceased was among those warning the thugs against tampering with the election process in the area.

“The man was shouting at one of the thugs to leave the polling unit and allow people to vote for their preferred candidate before he left for his house,” he said. The entire incident occurred a few minutes later. He is such a peaceful man who dislikes conflict; I hope his family can bear their loss.”

When contacted, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, stated, “I am not aware of that incident.”
