Chimamanda clinches Africa Freedom Award

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), says it will present the 2020 Africa Freedom Award to Nigeria’s Chimamanda Adichie.

A statement made available in Abuja on Sunday said that the event would be hosted by South African media personality, Redi Tihabi, with a special musical performance by Zolani Mahola.

The statement said that, in Adichie award winning work, she relentlessly addressed the central social grievances and political challenges of the time.

It said that as one of the most important intellectual champions of women rights, Adichie inspired people around the world in their pursuit of freedom.

“The award will be presented digitally on Dec. 14. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the long-lost, undogmatic voice of ibera feminism in the 21st century.

“She represents the success and self-image of a new generation of Africa women writers who are increasingly making their voices head on the world literary stage.

“In her fight for freedom and self-determination for women, Adichie contributes to the consolidation of liberal values and goals, not only in Africa, but all over the world,” it said.

It said that Adichie appreciated the prize, adding that “it’s always gratifying to be recognised, particularly in this case to join the good community of others, with commitment to the continent”. (NAN)
