Two people got killed on Friday as a Dangote truck fully loaded with bags of cement rammed into a stationary truck at Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The accident, which occurred close to Adekunle Ajasin University, led to the trucks catching fire.
Eyewitness account revealed that the driver of the truck loaded with bags of cement lost control as a result of brake failure while descending a hill and rammed into a truck that had broken down on the road.
Two people among traders and pedestrians along the road were said to have been killed instantly by the truck while several people who were trapped under the truck sustained varying degrees of injury.
Some of the residents have called on the federal and state government to construct speed breakers on the road to prevent incessant accident and killing of people by vehicles.
A source in the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on condition of anonymity said: “The corridor is well covered in our safety network both from Oka and Ikare axis where we have functional offices. But the hitch lies in the absence of finances for equipment and other logistics.”
In a couple of weeks ago, there was a serious accident in the same area of the community in which some people lost their lives as result of brake failure.
This has made the state government to compel those selling on the roadside to vacate the area and relocate to a new market built by the immediate past administration. (Independent)
