US President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday, without evidence, that Democrats were trying to “steal” the 2020 US election with illegal votes, saying he would “easily win” the race against Joe Biden without the alleged interference.
“If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us,” the president asserted Thursday evening in a speech from the White House.
Trump said his team had launched a “tremendous amount of litigation” to counter what he called the “corruption” of Democrats, even as several officials in battleground states where the vote remains undecided have defended the integrity of the vote.
“We grew our party by four million voters. Democrats are the party of the big donors and Republicans have become the party of the American worker,” said Trump.
The president went on to say, “I’ve been talking about mail-in voting for a long time. It’s destroyed our system. It’s amazing how those mail-in ballots are so one sided.”
“Our goal is to defend the integrity of the election. We can’t allow anybody to silence our voters and manufacture votes.”
