The Lagos State government says an automated system to be launched in 2027 will enable motorists in the state to get renewed driver’s licences within 10 minutes and new licences in 30 minutes.
This was reported by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) Rasheed Muri-Okunola during the 2026 media parley held by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, adding that testing was ongoing before the planned implementation.
He claimed the method will allow applicants to start the process from home before going to designated centers for biometric collection and other processes required. The Nation reported.
The project is anticipated to tackle chronic delays in the granting of driver’s licences, with some applicants waiting months or years after paying for their licences.
The permanent secretary stated the state has signed a concession agreement with the consultant to be part of the automation of the agency’s work.
The service will also include car documentation and number plate processing, enabling motorists to conduct additional administrative processes without having to go to government offices again.
The declaration was one of numerous updates given by agencies at the parley, including rail development, water transport, parking management and preparations for increased traffic during the December holiday season.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Abimbola Akinajo has stated that three more stations on the Blue Line, Alakija, Festac and Trade Fair are planned to begin service by the end of February 2027.
She stated the expansion would push the line beyond its current Mile 2 endpoint, with the long-term goal to take it to Okokomaiko.
Three eight car train sets are planned to be added to the Red Line fleet in November, allowing daily services to grow from nine to 20 initially and eventually to 28 before the end of 2027, Akinajo said.
She stated that four major quality bus lanes including their terminals and depots were projected to be ready by February 2027.
On Water Transportation, officials stated the five-year Omi Eko project that started in 2026 was projected to deliver 25 ports and jetties and roughly 78 electric boats.
Lagos is scheduled to see the first boats arriving in roughly 2028, with full operations set to begin by 2031 when supporting infrastructure is complete.
The Lagos State Parking Authority has also announced intentions to expand its operations and provide technology-driven parking fees, including cashless choices and mobile phone payments.
Meanwhile, the General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Olumide Filade, said over 2,000 people would be deployed to important traffic corridors and commercial centers during the December rush complemented by recovery vehicles and nite operations.
Between January and September, more than 365 traffic incidents were documented on the Toll Gate to Kara Bridge corridor resulting in around 15 deaths, he claimed.
There were also around 860 incidents on the Coastal Road for the time under consideration with about 17 lives lost.
