Security sources have revealed that a mobile police officer, Abdulrahman Auwal, has been slain in a machete attack in Plateau State.
The incident happened at around 6:51 p.m. on Thursday on Kwi Road, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, according to reports from counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
The officer was on his way to his duty position in Chit area of Heipang District when the attackers struck, the report said.
Operation Enduring Peace forces reacted to a distress call but the attackers had fled before they arrived.
Colleagues transported the victim to a hospital where he was declared dead after being stabbed several times with a machete.
Reports say the assailants also took the officer’s motorbike with them as they escaped.
Berom Youth Moulders-Association spokesman Rwang Tengwong confirmed the tragedy, saying it was troubling.
The attack, Tengwong added, was a serious concern for the safety of locals, especially as security officers deployed to defend communities also came under attack.
He condemned the assassination and called for urgent measures to solve the security concerns in the region.
“Security forces have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the attack and to identify the perpetrators for a possible arrest.”
As of press time, DSP Alabo Alfred, the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, had not responded to enquiries.
The assassination comes amid heightened tensions in Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas where curfews were recently imposed to control protests.
