Cross River State Police Command has detained a 24-year-old student, Emmanuel Ejim, over a viral video of accused cult members shooting firearms from a moving vehicle in Calabar.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, in a statement, said the incident occurred in the early hours of September 17, 2026, a development that prompted the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue to command the quick identification and arrest of individuals involved.
The police said an intelligence-led operation was begun at about 11:30 p.m. on 17 September by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations and operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
The Command claimed the operation led to the identification and tracing of the vehicle used in the viral film and the arrest of the driver, Saturday Guardian reports.
Police apparently used information from the driver to track Ejim down to a motel in Calabar, where he was detained.
Ejim was believed to be a student of the University of Cross River (UNICROSS), and upon questioning by the police, he identified himself as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity.
He is reported to have confessed to being the man seen firing the rounds in the viral footage.
The suspect further informed detectives that he had been engaged in a sign-out activity on the day of the incident, and that the weapon he allegedly used in the shooting was provided to him by another suspected member of the group.
The Command said efforts had been stepped up to identify and arrest other suspects involved to the incident, adding that the circumstances surrounding the holding of the firearm and transportation of the car were still being investigated.
The Commissioner of Police ordered the inquiry to be handled in a professional and thorough manner that anybody was found to have participated or facilitated the alleged act be brought to book.
The Command described illegal firing of guns in public places as a severe security threat and called on the locals to report suspicious movements, ownership of firearms and cult related activities to the police.
Further details will be given as the investigation develops, police said.
