The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a seven-hour shutdown of its 330/132kV Ajaokuta Transmission Substation today, Tuesday, September 15, 2026, as engineers begin annual preventive maintenance on a critical 162MVA power transformer and associated high-voltage equipment.
The maintenance, scheduled for 9am to 4pm, is expected to disrupt electricity supply to a broad corridor of communities and industrial customers served through the affected transmission infrastructure by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
TCN, in its maintenance notice issued on Monday, said the exercise would cover the 162MVA, 330/132kV transformer, associated switchgear and ancillary equipment at the Ajaokuta substation.
The planned intervention places a major transmission asset at the centre of a controlled seven-hour outage, with TCN seeking to carry out preventive work before possible equipment deterioration develops into an unplanned and potentially longer disruption.
For consumers, however, the maintenance means a temporary loss of supply across parts of Kogi and Edo, including residential communities as well as major commercial and industrial users.
AEDC supply corridor affected
TCN said AEDC would be unable to off-take electricity for onward distribution to customers in Ekirin, Omuo, Ibillo, Akoko, Ogala, Ikare, Magongo, Okene Town, Ayere, Kabba and adjoining areas during the maintenance period.
The affected corridor covers a mixture of residential communities, commercial centres and businesses whose electricity supply depends on the transmission infrastructure connected to Ajaokuta.
The scheduled outage is therefore expected to affect households, traders, service providers and other electricity consumers during the seven-hour maintenance window.
The impact will extend into the BEDC network, with TCN listing Okpella Town, Ososo, Uluoke, Iyora, Apana, Okpekpe, Arigidi, Ikare Town, Lampese, Igara and Oka among the affected locations.
More significantly for the industrial economy, the disruption will also affect several major industrial and commercial customers, including BUA Cement Company, West African Fertilizer Company, Dibeks Milling Company, Edestein Company and Freedom Group Company.
The inclusion of industrial users gives the planned maintenance a wider economic dimension, as electricity interruptions can affect production schedules, operating costs and business continuity for facilities dependent on grid supply.
TCN’s intervention is different from an emergency outage triggered by a sudden equipment fault.
The Company has deliberately scheduled the shutdown to enable its maintenance crew to inspect and service the transformer, switchgear and associated equipment under controlled conditions.
That distinction is important for the transmission network because preventive maintenance allows engineers to identify potential defects and undertake corrective work before equipment failure causes a more extensive interruption.
The Ajaokuta substation is consequently being taken through a planned maintenance window rather than waiting for an unplanned failure of the 162MVA transformer or associated equipment.
The maintenance is scheduled to commence at 9am and run until 4pm, giving TCN engineers a seven-hour window to complete the work.
TCN said electricity supply would be restored to the affected areas immediately after completion of the maintenance exercise.
The Company apologized to affected electricity consumers for the inconvenience and appealed for their understanding and cooperation.
For customers across the affected Kogi and Edo corridors, the immediate reality is a planned seven-hour interruption; for TCN, the exercise is a pre-emptive intervention aimed at keeping a 162MVA transmission asset and its associated 330/132kV equipment operational.
The success of the exercise will ultimately be measured not by the duration of today’s outage, but by whether the maintenance helps prevent the far more disruptive prospect of an unexpected failure on a critical transmission corridor.
