The ride-hailing giant, Uber, will cease operations in Nigeria effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, ending its 12-year presence in the country.
In an email to consumers, the company said the decision followed a “thorough review” of its business operations in Nigeria.
Uber began in Lagos in 2014 and has grown to become one of the largest ride-hailing services, linking riders to individual drivers around the country.
“We have conducted a thorough review of our business and have made the difficult decision to close our operations in Nigeria effective 2 September 2026,” the company told clients in its statement.
Uber commended Nigerians for their trust in the platform over the years, saying its services have been utilised for everyday commutes, visits to family and friends and mobility around the city.
Since our first launch in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute honour to be part of your everyday life connecting you with independent transport providers, the firm stated.
“We know this may disrupt your routine and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” Uber added.
Uber’s exit is an important milestone in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, where it has battled for more than a decade with other top platforms.
The business also asked users who had any last queries about their accounts to contact Uber by September 23, 2026, setting the date as the deadline for the submission of such questions when it closes operations in Nigeria.
