The Force also declared a ban on movement in the state from midnight yesterday, Friday, August 14, 2026, to 6:00 p.m. today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, as part of preparations to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
This was stated yesterday, in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Anietie Iniedu, ahead of the poll.
“Only the police, as security agencies recognised and established by the Constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are empowered to carry out security and law enforcement duties in relation to the election,” the police said.
It warned that no non-state security group, vigilante or any other unauthorised body would be allowed to take over or perform the tasks of a registered security agency.
“Accordingly such groups are advised to keep away from election related security operations and refrain from any activity that could intimidate voters, disrupt the electoral process or undermine public peace and security, the statement said.
The Force appealed to the general people to completely comply with the limitation on movement and to cooperate with the security troops deployed in the state.
The restriction period would allow only persons and categories of mobility expressly exempted by the proper authorities, it said.
The police also appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves in a peaceful and responsible manner and cautioned against any activities that could lead to violence and disturb the electoral process.
Prior to the election, the Force reiterated its commitment to peace and security, and to provide a level playing field for all political players and eligible voters.
It further advised locals to stay calm, obey the law, and report any suspicious or illegal activity promptly to security institutions recognised by the constitution and the law.
