Ghana’s Supreme Court is bolstered by the appointment of Justice Edward Amoako Asante, a former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, who is among the most experienced jurists in West Africa.
The office of President John Dramani Mahama has announced the nomination of Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah of the Court of Appeal and former Ghana Bar Association President Tony Forson for appointment to the Supreme Court. The nominations are pending parliamentary confirmation in line with Ghana’s Constitution.
The nominations, made by President Mahama on the advice of the Judicial Council and in conjunction with the Council of State, are in line with Article 144 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, an official statement said.
If Parliament approves the three nominees, they would join the Supreme Court bench, strengthening the judiciary at a time when the government is working to improve judicial efficiency and public confidence in the justice system.
Justice Asante is widely acclaimed across West Africa for his stewardship of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, where he served as the sixth President of the institution from 2018 to October 2024, elected and re-elected by his peers.
During his tenure the regional court broadened its human rights jurisprudence, enhanced case management systems and managed important institutional improvements including the move of the court to a modern headquarters in Abuja. He also presided over many historic cases on human rights, governance and the interpretation of ECOWAS treaties.
