England and Ghana are one step closer to the final 32 of the World Cup after drawing 0-0 in Foxborough yesterday.
Thomas Tuchel’s side tops Group L with four points, ahead of Ghana on goal difference, before their last match against Panama, where a win would likely see them top the group and face a last-32 tie in Atlanta on July 1, AFP said.
England opened their campaign last week with a magnificent 4-2 win over Croatia, their aggressive offensive play sweeping aside the 2018 World Cup finalists.
But England couldn’t find the inventiveness to break down a Ghana team playing deep, producing almost no opportunities to really threaten the Black Stars.
England were also lucky not to concede what appeared to be a stonewall penalty in the 79th minute when Ezri Konsa clattered replacement Prince Adu in the box.
The last minutes summed up a poor England effort as captain Harry Kane fired over the bar from point-blank range with the goal gaping.
The loss puts England and Ghana tied on four points with Croatia and Panama to play later yesterday.
Croatia captain Luka Modric is poised to make his 200th appearance for his country, with only three men’s players having featured more times on the international stage.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said yesterday on the pitch that US President Donald Trump will be there at the World Cup final in New Jersey on 19 July to present the trophy to the winners.
“Together with the president, we will be enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” Infantino told Fox & Friends.
One of the title favourites, France revealed on Tuesday coach Didier Deschamps had left the team’s camp to go home after the loss of his mother.
Deschamps’ exit means assistant Guy Stephan will take charge of the squad for Friday’s final group game against Norway, when Les Bleus only need to draw to clinch first place.
