The Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy (CFRPA), a civil society organisation, has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking for clarification on issues bordering on the academic credentials presented by President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election process ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a letter to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, the group asked the electoral body to clarify its position on allegations made about the authenticity and legal status of certificates attributed to the President. The group said the issue impacts on electoral credibility and public confidence, reports The Guardian.
The group, in a letter dated June 19, 2026, and signed by its Head of Legal Unit, Barrister Kalu Agu, sought INEC to guide the people on the legal consequences of the claims ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
CFRPA cited previous legal actions and papers in respect of academic records from Chicago State University, and claims related to other credentials included in election filings and demanded an independent clarification from the electoral authority.
The group said addressing the issue will help build openness, the rule of law and public faith in the democratic process.
It said INEC’s reluctance to clarify its stance may leave it with no option than to seek legal recourse. “Electoral institutions must resolve questions bordering on candidates’ eligibility before future elections.
INEC has not responded to the request publicly as at the time of reporting this story.
