Three persons have died as a result of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service incident.
The event occurred on Sunday, Channels TV says.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the derailment and said emergency response teams and appropriate authorities are on ground attending to the situation and rendering essential assistance.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) wishes to confirm that there was an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) today.
“The emergency response teams and other relevant authorities are currently on the ground coping with the situation and rendering necessary assistance,” the statement signed by its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, partly read.
“The Corporation is monitoring developments closely and will issue a detailed statement as soon as more information is available,” it said.
The incident occurred less than a month after the NRC briefly suspended the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS), following operational constraints and technical advise by its engineers.
It said the temporary suspension was necessitated to allow it to carry out important operational inspections aimed at guaranteeing continuing safety, dependability and better service delivery on the corridor.
“The NRC regrets any inconvenience this development may cause to passengers and other stakeholders. The NRC assures the public that efforts are on to resolve the issues within the shortest possible time.
“The date for the resumption of normal train operations will be duly communicated to passengers and intending travellers before the end of the week,” the agency’s statement had said.
The agency has noted a derailment in November 2025 on the train service blaming it on the acts of vandals.
It said two individuals were detained in November, 2025 in connection with the train derailment incident on the Warri-Itakpe line in Agbor, Delta State.
A passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed in August 2025, causing panic among passengers and their relations.
The event occurred on the Kaduna corridor just minutes after the train left Abuja at about 11 a.m. on its way to Kaduna.
“It was chaos, people were running for their lives. There was panic and confusion,” one passenger on the train was quoted as saying.
In November 2025, the Senate, alarmed by the continuing derailments on the nation’s rail lines, appointed an ad hoc committee to conduct a full inquiry.
The examination was aimed at unearthing the core reasons of the frequent derailments and the state of rail infrastructure and the imported materials used in the industry.
