Emergency rescue operations are on after a train running along the Warri – Itakpe rail track derailed on Monday, leaving several people believed dead.
The exact number of casualties is not known as search, rescue and evaluation activities are still underway by the authorities at the scene.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the event and added that emergency personnel and necessary agencies have been deployed to assist impacted passengers and control the situation.
The corporation claimed in a statement signed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa:
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) today.
Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are on scene managing the situation and providing required support.
The NRC said it is watching the situation closely and will provide more updates when more information is available.
“The corporation is closely monitoring developments and a detailed statement will be issued when more information is available,” the statement said.
As rescue operations continue and investigations unfold, authorities are anticipated to reveal more information.
