Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited has officially commenced local assembly of the next generation Peugeot 3008 and 5008 sport utility vehicles at its greenfield manufacturing plant in Kaduna, a substantial expansion of local automotive manufacturing in Nigeria. The first cars are slated to be on sale next month, it was announced on April 17, 2026.
The Kaduna facility, which was completed four years ago, first focused on producing the Peugeot Landtrek pick-up. The two SUV models will complement the diversity of the facility and improve the brand’s line-up for customers in Nigeria. The 3008 and 5008 will be available in Allure and high-end GT trim levels, using a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine with 163 horsepower, mated to an EAT6 automated gearbox.
Six years ago, DPAN was created as a joint venture between Dangote Industries Limited and Peugeot, the flagship brand of the global Stellantis group. The cooperation is a long term commitment to local production and lowering dependency on foreign vehicles.
The growth was put in the perspective of the development of the regional economy by Stellantis South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director Michael Whitfield. “Nigeria is one of the two largest economies in Africa and helping to create a local and sustainable automotive industry is part of the actualisation of the African Free Trade Area. “We are pleased to be continuing the work with Dangote Industries and believe the arrival of the new products will meet the needs of our Nigerian customers,” Whitfield added.
Speaking, DPAN’s Commercial Director, Umar Kaita, said: “The Peugeot brand has a deep historical connection with Nigerian consumers and we are optimistic about the revival. “From the 1940s to the 1980s Peugeot was a household name in Nigeria and this local production will see the Peugeot Lion re-emerge in the Nigerian landscape again,” Kaita said.
The Kaduna plant has a daily capacity of 120 vehicles per shift on two shifts and an ambitious annual aim of 44,000 units. The venture has the Kaduna, Plateau and Kebbi state governments as shareholders. The 3008 is positioned as a sleek and fuel-efficient mid-sized SUV, and the 5008 provides a bigger seven-seat layout for family and commercial use. Industry watchers say the introduction of these models is part of a bigger strategy to re-establish Peugeot as a major player in Nigeria’s auto industry.
