People in Lugbe, Abuja, a town that is growing quickly, are enjoying a big improvement in their energy supply thanks to the construction of a new transformer by the Abuja energy Distribution Company.
The town had to deal with constant power outages for over three years since the transformer was overloaded and shared with two other locations. The scenario made everyday life harder and hurt small enterprises that need reliable electricity.
The new leaders of the community were determined to find a long-term solution, so they made getting a dedicated transformer their top priority. However, attempts to pay for the project on their own quickly failed, as the estimated expenses were more than ₦35 million.
The Nigerian electrical Regulatory Commission sets rules that say distribution corporations are in charge of electrical infrastructure. In January 2026, the community formally asked AEDC to do anything about it.
Residents said that AEDC’s quick and admirable response was to process the request and, within four months, provide and install a brand-new 500KVA transformer with all the necessary parts at no cost.
“This is a big change for our neighborhood. A spokesman from the neighborhood commented, “We can finally look forward to reliable electricity.” “AEDC acted professionally and openly at all times.”
Another person who lived there said, “For years, we had trouble with our electricity supply. This intervention has brought back hope, not just for families but also for owners of small businesses.
The project is considered as a sign of ongoing changes in Nigeria’s power sector, which stress working together between service providers and regulatory organizations. It also fits with the government’s larger initiatives under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make the power system stronger and better at providing services.
People in the community thanked AEDC for following the rules and told other groups who are having similar problems to talk to the right people.
A local leader said, “This shows that when people do things the right way, government institutions can get things done.”
Residents said that the installation of the transformer was not just an improvement to the infrastructure, but also a sign of good government and strong citizen participation leading to real benefits.
