Starting on April 8, 2026, the UK government will raise the fees for several types of visas, residency applications, and citizenship processes. This would affect Nigerians and other foreigners who want to visit, study, work, or live in the UK.
The UK Home Office’s new fee schedule, which our correspondent saw today, shows that almost all types of visa applications made from inside and outside the UK will cost more. This includes visit visas, student visas, work visas, settlement applications, and naturalization fees, according to The PUNCH.
The changes will go into effect in less than two weeks. Nigeria is still one of the biggest sources of visa applicants to the UK, with hundreds of thousands of Nigerians seeking for visit, student, and work visas every year.
The price of a short-term visit visa goes up from £127 to £135, and the price of a student visa goes up from £524 to £558. Nigerians who want to live in the UK permanently would have to pay £3,226, up from £3,029. Those who want to become British citizens will have to pay £1,709, up from £1,605.
The charge for registering a child as a British citizen is going down, which is unusual for the general trend of rising fees. The fee is going down from £1,214 to £1,000, which is a £214 drop. All other fees go up or stay the same. The Tier 1 (Investor) visa and the High Potential Individual visa are still the same at £2,000 and £880, respectively.
