On Saturday, Russia and Ukraine attacked each other again, killing at least four people. Both sides are getting ready for more diplomatic efforts to settle the long-running war.
Ukrainian officials stated that a Russian drone attack on an apartment building in Zaporizhzhia killed a man and a woman and hurt six other people, including two children. In northern Ukraine, strikes also cut off electricity to many areas of the Chernihiv region.
Authorities in Russia said that Ukrainian shelling in the Belgorod region killed two ladies and hurt another. This shows that hostilities are still going on over the border.
The situation is getting worse just before U.S. and Ukrainian officials meet in Miami for talks that are part of continuing mediation efforts to get stalled negotiations back on track. Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy, said that the talks were “constructive” and focused on finding solutions to problems that needed to be solved in order to reach a wider peace accord. Jared Kushner was also there.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Kyiv had sent a group of people to the United States to ask for the resumption of negotiations with Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. These talks have been on hold for the past few weeks, in part because the world’s focus has turned to the situation in the Middle East.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, said that new talks might happen soon.
Officials in the West have regularly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of stalling talks while trying to strengthen his territorial gains. Russian troops are in charge of around 20% of Ukraine’s land right now.
The ongoing fight has also been pushed to the background by the growing turmoil in Iran, which has drawn international attention away from it. Ukraine is still having trouble with its finances while it waits for a big package of support from the European Union. On the other hand, Russia is getting some temporary reprieve from oil sanctions.
Even while diplomatic attempts are being made again, hopes for a breakthrough are low because combat is still going on in many places.
