Last night, Sunday, March 15, 2026, the Dolby Theatre hosted the 98th Academy Awards. The awards honored the greatest movies from 2025.
The ceremony, which Conan O’Brien hosted for the second year in a row, lasted about three hours and 45 minutes. AFP says that ABC aired it and Hulu streamed it.
This year’s Oscars had a stage that looked like a garden courtyard. There were live performances of “I Lied To You” by Sinners, a tribute to Robert Redford by Barbra Streisand, and the usual In Memoriam segment. Due to outside threats around the event, security was said to have been increased.
Two Warner Bros. movies, One Battle After Another and Sinners, were the main events of the night. They had been tough competitors all awards season.
One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, won six Academy Awards that night, including Best Picture. Leonardo DiCaprio plays an ex-radical in a high-stakes chase in this dark political thriller.
Sinners, on the other hand, won four Oscars, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, who played twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore in the vampire horror drama.
Sinners had a record-breaking 16 nominations going into the ceremony, the most ever at the Oscars. However, they ended the night with fewer wins than they had hoped for. The movie did, however, reach some historic milestones and helped Warner Bros. have a great showing, as they won 11 awards, more than any other studio.
The 2026 ceremony had a number of important moments.
Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by being the first woman to win Best Cinematography for her work on Sinners. She was also the first woman of color to be nominated in this category. In her statement of thanks, she asked all the ladies in the audience to rise up and thanked the women who helped with the campaign.
The creation of Best Casting, the first new competitive Oscar category in 24 years, was another big step forward. One Battle After Another won it.
Anderson’s night was a long-awaited breakthrough. He had been nominated for 14 Oscars before, but this was his first win. He won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay in one night, making him the ninth individual in Academy history to win all three prizes.
Amy Madigan, a veteran actress, also made a record for the longest time between acting nominations. She won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons at the Oscars after 40 years.
Frankenstein won a lot of craft prizes, and KPop Demon Hunters, an animated smash, won two trophies.
