After a middle-aged man allegedly killed his wife by slicing her throat after a dispute on their farm, tragedy hit Amaji village in Umuoyoro community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Following the incident on Thursday, February 19, 2026, officers from the Eberi Police Division under the Oyigbo Area Command apprehended the culprit, who was simply named as Mr. Alachi.
The couple apparently got into a small argument after they arrived at their farm in Amaji village, according to local reports. According to the Saturday Guardian, what started out as a dispute swiftly turned violent.
The defendant allegedly slit his wife’s throat, a mother of two, with a kitchen knife during the process.
The woman’s frantic cries for assistance, according to the locals, caught the attention of other villagers who were working close by.
The culprit was apparently overwhelmed and captured by the indigenous, who then hurried to the site and turned him over to security personnel.
Many locals have described the conduct as unthinkable and extremely upsetting, and the horrific murder has sent the peaceful rural village into shock and grief.
According to security sources, the suspect reportedly admitted to detectives during first questioning that he had no idea what had happened to him that resulted in the deadly crime.
The event was confirmed by Chief Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokeswoman for the Rivers State Police Command.
“Yes, I am able to verify the incidence. In order to ensure prompt justice, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the case, and the suspect has been placed under arrest,” she stated.
Prince Wiro, the national coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign and a human rights champion, has denounced the murder, calling it the pinnacle of human inhumanity.
In order to achieve justice for the deceased and her children, Wiro emphasized that no miscommunication between couples could excuse such a heinous murder and encouraged the police to carry out an exhaustive and open inquiry.
