A terrible car accident on the Ballet inward Oshodi-Apapa Expressway yesterday killed two people and hurt several more. The bus was a commercial vehicle named as Faka SMK 823 YK.
An eyewitness says that the incident, which happened about 5 p.m., was caused by an unknown private vehicle backing up on the main road. This forced the commercial minibus, which was going quite fast, to hit the brakes, according to Vanguard.
The abrupt move made the car unstable, and it flipped over many times before finally catching fire. There were nine people aboard the bus.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials who rushed to the scene said that the commercial bus driver was carrying a five-liter canister of gasoline in the bus.
The very flammable chemical caught fire right after the impact, starting a huge conflagration.
“Sadly, the driver and a woman in the front passenger seat burned beyond recognition in the fire that followed,” said LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki.
Bakre-Oki said that LASTMA officers, who were doing normal traffic surveillance in the area, responded quickly and professionally.
He said, “They quickly rescued eight passengers from the wreckage before the fire got worse and helped them get to a nearby medical facility with the help of a good-hearted driver.”
The accident scene was quickly secured with the help of the Ilasa Police Division’s Divisional Traffic Officer (DTO), who was on the scene to make sure that traffic and safety were both good. The mishap caused the axis to become stuck.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulances Service (LASAMBUS) also put out the fire and handled emergency rescue operations.
