Muhammad Kabir Tishama, 20, was detained by prison guards affiliated with the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCoS) in Kano for trying to smuggle illegal substances to prisoners hidden inside a loaf of bread.
According to Vanguard, the suspect was captured by watchful policemen as prisoners from the Goron Dutse Custodial Center were being led to the Kano High Court for their individual hearings.
According to the authorities, Tishama planned to provide the bread to an inmate during the court hearings because it contained what they believed to be Indian cannabis.
The arrest demonstrates the command’s continued vigilance against attempts to introduce drugs into detention institutions, according to Musbahu Lawan, the command spokesperson who confirmed the event. Similar attempts had lately been thwarted, he remembered.
“Muhammad Kabir Tishama of Hotoro, Kano, has been arrested by the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, for trying to smuggle illegal drugs into a custodial facility at the Kano High Court premises,” Lawan stated.
“While prisoners were being brought to court, the suspect was captured. During the hearings, the hidden materials—possibly Indian hemp—were meant for an inmate.
Lawan also stated that the suspect has been ordered to be turned over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and potential prosecution by Ado Inuwa, Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command.
Additionally, he praised the officers’ professionalism and awareness.
According to Lawan, “the Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to maintaining safe, secure, and drug-free custodial environments.” “We also reiterate our mission to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate offenders into society while urging parents and guardians to warn their children against criminal activity.”
The incident demonstrates how vigilant Kano prison officials are in keeping personnel and convicts safe and secure while also limiting the introduction of illegal substances into custodial facilities.
