Dr. Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman, North-West of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has critically examined the nation and determined that the nine years of the APC are worse than the sixteen years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It is quite sad that a party that came with all the promises of improving Nigeria has ended up destroying the nation, Lukman said, adding that by any measure, both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC have failed Nigerians.
According to Lukman, the main political opposition leaders are perhaps oblivious of this, but President Tinubu’s strength or confidence stems from their unwillingness to be transparent and genuinely start negotiating in order to present a united front before 2027.
In a statement released over the weekend, Lukman pointed out that, in contrast to the PDP, which permitted the opposition parties to operate while it was in power, the current opposition groups are being coerced into more serious existential crises.
“Since 2015, we have transitioned from being opposition politicians to becoming a ruling party,” he stated. Unfortunately, we have deteriorated as a ruling party compared to the PDP that we overthrew in 2015. In contrast to the PDP’s era, when opposition parties were permitted to operate, we now face the grim and dismal fact that all opposition parties are being coerced into more serious existential crises.
For example, the PDP has a Trojan horse in former governor Nyesom Wike, who is poised to drag the party into political oblivion. There is no end in sight to the internal leadership issues plaguing the Labour Party. Even if the party’s stakeholders convened to designate a caretaker committee, the action’s legitimacy is questionable. The NNPP is facing its own set of leadership difficulties and, for some reason, is simply trying to survive what is obviously a planned attempt by the unbeatable APC troops to drive it out of Kano State, which is its only political stronghold.
At this moment, it’s critical to urge our main opposition leaders to awaken, try to show compassion, and see the seriousness of the catastrophic situation that the people are in. The crucial question is whether we want to keep mismanaging our reality and giving up every opportunity that a democratic system should provide because of our own aspirations. A democratic system provides the opportunity for any administration that fails its constituents to be overthrown by popular vote.
Without a question, Nigerians have been let down by both President Asiwaju Tinubu and the APC. It is very depressing that a party that promised to improve Nigeria has ended up destroying the nation. The issues we had in 2015, which included the economy, insecurity, and corruption—the three main issues that the APC and former President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to address—are trivial in comparison to what we have now.
“Somehow, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strength or confidence stems from their failure to open up and honestly start negotiating to create a cohesive front ahead of 2027, whether they realize it or not.
The primary people mentioned by prominent opposition political figures include Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwasau, Mr. Peter Obi, and Alh. Atiku Abubakar. These are leaders that have made the necessary sacrifices and are now pursuing their goal of becoming the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s president. In the most recent election of 2023, they ran for president. If nothing else, the APC and President Asiwaju Tinubu won that election because they were unable to come together on a single political platform.
