The Court of Appeal in Kano has maintained the death sentence given to Abdulmalik Tanko for killing Hanifa Abubakar, a little girl.
According to Daily Trust, Justice A. R. Muhammad turned down Tanko’s appeal and upheld the Kano State High Court’s decision to hang him.
The appellate court said that the trial court did the right thing by following the law and looking at the facts in the right way.
Justice Muhammad said that the appellant’s arguments were not valid and that the prosecution’s case was strong and convincing. He noted that the Court of Appeal did not find any reason to change or overturn the verdict of the lower court.
The judge also told the right people to make sure that the sentence is carried out once the criminal has used up all of their legal options for appeal.
Tanko, the owner of Noble Kids Academy in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, kidnapped Hanifa Abubakar in December 2021 when she was five years old. She was a student there.
Tanko asked her family for ₦6 million in ransom, then gave the child rat poison, which killed her.
The case caused indignation around the country, not only because the victim was so young, but also because the crime was done by the owner of the school who was supposed to be taking care of her.
Tanko was charged with criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and culpable homicide on January 24, 2022, along with Isyaku Hashim and Fatima Jibril.
But on July 28, 2022, the Kano State High Court, led by Justice Usman Na’abba, condemned Tanko and Hashim to death by hanging and Fatima Jibril to two years in prison.
