Heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua and another passenger are stable, according to Ogun and Lagos state, following thorough clinical evaluations at a Lagos medical facility.
This was said in a statement that was co-signed by Lagos State Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso and Kayode Akinlade, Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on Information and Strategy.
They were taken to a specialized medical institution in Lagos right away. Doctors have determined after thorough clinical evaluations that both patients are stable and do not now need emergency medical attention. A comprehensive medical team has been put together and will keep a careful eye on them, the statement said.
“The governments of Ogun and Lagos states would like to confirm that Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer and two-time unified world champion, was involved in a traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway earlier today.”
Two people were apparently killed when the car carrying a group of four, including the 35-year-old globally renowned boxer, collided with a stationary truck.
The statement further said, “We pray that Almighty God gives the families the strength to bear this difficult loss and extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.”
Additionally, both nations revealed that Anthony Joshua is awake and has been in contact with his family.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun are keeping a careful eye on the situation and will make sure that the impacted individuals get the finest care available. Additionally, investigations into the accident’s circumstances have begun.
“We respectfully ask for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family during this time, and we appreciate the public’s concern.”
Yesterday, Joshua was a part of a traffic accident in Ogun State’s Makun area.
Two people were killed in the event, which occurred at roughly 11:00 am along the heavily crowded Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
A stalled truck was reported to have struck with the SUV carrying Joshua.
The 35-year-old former heavyweight champion appears to have sustained injuries as he is pulled from the wrecked car in a video of the incident.
Just eight days had passed since the former heavyweight world champion defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in their Miami fight sponsored by Netflix when the event occurred.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said in a statement that wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding were to blame for the collision.
According to preliminary investigations, the Lexus Jeep lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck that was packed by the side of the road. The Lexus Jeep was accused of exceeding the legally mandated speed limit on the corridor.
According to FRSC, “the primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, sent his deepest sympathies to the relatives of the victims and wished Joshua, the injured victim, a quick recovery.
