A surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) was fired by the Ekiti State Government after it was alleged that he had removed a patient’s kidney without the patient’s previous consent.
This was stated in a statement that Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health, signed and provided to reporters.
Additionally, it suggested that, pending additional administrative review, all surgical team members who were in the operating room on the day of the procedure be placed on leave for a month.
This choice was made in response to the comprehensive report that the Ministry for Health and Human Services received from the seven-person panel of inquiry, which was led by Professor Francis Faduyile.
“The panel was constituted 11 days ago to investigate the claim made by one Joshua Afolayan regarding a surgical procedure he underwent at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH),” the statement said in part.
Following a thorough examination of the report and its suggestions, the Ekiti State Government has authorized the following measures:
With immediate effect, the surgeon who was primarily in charge of the procedure will no longer be employed by the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
“Until further administrative review, all members of the surgical team who were in the operating room on the day of the procedure will be suspended from duty for a month.”
Additionally, the state government declared that it will cover Afolayan’s entire kidney transplant expenses.
“Mr. Joshua Afolayan’s new kidney transplant will be fully funded by the Ekiti State Government, which will also cover his post-transplant care and transplant-related medical maintenance for a period of two years.
“A thorough restructuring of pertinent departments within EKSUTH will be implemented in accordance with the panel’s recommendations to enhance clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety,” the statement said.
The government added that it will not hesitate to take harsh measures when professional standards are violated, even though it still firmly supports the numerous committed and hardworking health professionals at EKSUTH and recognizes their sacrifices and dedication to service.
It reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding patients, maintaining professional and ethical standards in the provision of healthcare, and reestablishing and maintaining public trust in the Ekiti State healthcare system.
To guarantee that such occurrences do not happen again and that EKSUTH remains a center of excellence in patient care, the necessary reforms will be sought.
The statement went on, “We thank the people of Ekiti State for their patience and trust, and we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to continued improvement in quality health care, compassion, and responsible governance.”
