Governors, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other governors have been asked by President Bola Tinubu to support the idea for the implementation of local government autonomy and the creation of state police.
Tinubu made the request yesterday during the 14th APC National Caucus meeting, which was held in Abuja.
According to Channels TV, he urged governors to support the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government authority.
He asserts that the court’s ruling alone is insufficient; local government bodies must get funding directly.
In order to maintain gender parity, President Tinubu also urged more women to join the APC National Caucus.
In light of Nigeria’s growing security issues, calls for state police have become more urgent.
Mutfwang’s Membership Drive and Defection
The defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang was announced by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yelwata in his introductory remarks.
Plateau native Yelwata claimed that the APC currently controls the entire North Central area as a result of Governor Mutfwang’s defection.
The governor is the most recent well-known politician to leave the main opposition party after being elected under the PDP in the general elections of 2023.
The APC issued a deadline of January 30, 2026, for all members to complete their computerized membership registration as part of the party’s expansion campaign.
According to the party’s head, the already-initiated computerized membership registration system will improve internal democracy, data integrity, and openness.
We have conducted training at the state, zonal, and local government levels in the majority of the states. Additionally, I would want to implore our stakeholders to support this admirable endeavor’s nationwide deployment.
“Let’s take use of this chance to reassure all new members that they have all the rights and benefits within the party and to encourage them to register their supporters and take advantage of the statewide membership registration drive. In order to register all of their members, both new and existing members should visit the portal.
We anticipate that this campaign will take place between now and January 30. Every member needs to have signed up and been ready for our next congresses,” he stated.
