Olubankole Wellington, also known as Banky W, is a singer and pastor who has spoken out against the growing criticism of church teachings on wealth. He warned against making broad statements and condemned abuses in some religious groups.
In a recent discussion, the music executive noted that talks about the “prosperity gospel” had grown very divided, with many Nigerians thinking that the problems of a few people represent the whole church.
He said, “I don’t think it’s fair to say that everyone is guilty of this thing just because I’ve seen proof of it here.”
Banky W said that both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel twist the heart of Christian doctrine.
He added, “The prosperity gospel is wrong and corrupt, and the poverty gospel is also wrong and corrupt.” “The gospel said that God would meet all of your needs and bless you so that you could be a blessing.”
He also said that the idea that Christians must either become billionaires or accept poverty is wrong.
He stated, “That is the promise. The promise is not that we are all meant to be Dangote and Otedola, and it’s also not that we are meant to sleep under the bridge.”
Banky W told Nigerians not to judge all churches by the actions of a few, even though he knew that some churches had misused their teachings.
“There is a part of the church that has taken that and used it badly, and those claims are true, and I don’t like them either,” he remarked.
