Olusegun Awolowo Jr.’s death has been characterized by Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun as a tragic loss on a human level.
In a note of condolence, the governor expressed his sadness at the untimely passing of the 62-year-old attorney and former head of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council.
He spoke of Awolowo Jr. as “a gentleman par excellence, a voice of courage, and a consummate public servant,” saying that he was shocked to hear the news and will always remember their time together fondly.
Abiodun claims that the late man was “affable, highly intelligent, and extremely easy-going,” qualities that won him many fans and made his death all the more tragic.
We surrender wholeheartedly to the will of the Almighty God, who has summoned Segun Awolowo Jr. to His embrace, as we struggle to comprehend the news of his passing, he stated. We find solace in the life lessons dad gave us, because he was truly a wonderful human being, even though our hearts are devastated.
The governor made a point of mentioning that Awolowo Jr. overcame adversity to become a legendary figure, despite being born just two months after his father passed away and having known loss since boyhood.
Awolowo was a special assistant on traditional institutions, legal due diligence, and legal matters in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. He had previously worked for the law firms of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co. following his call to the bar in December 1989.
Abiodun continued by saying that his impeccable record of service in various capacities, including Special Assistant to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Secretary for Social Development, and Secretary of Transport (2007–2011), and Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (2013–2021).
The president of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) from ECOWAS member states was unanimously elected in July 2021, he added, due to Awolowo’s commitment to national development.
“His time on Earth may have been short, but it had a profound impact,” the governor said.
Praying that God would give his wife and children strength to endure the loss, Prince Abiodun extended his condolences to the entire Awolowo family as well as Nigerians generally.
“May his peaceful spirit find eternal peace,” he prayed.
