Having been elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at yesterday’s National Convention in Ibadan, Kabiru Turaki has pledged to fulfill the aspirations of party members and the people of Nigeria generally.
According to Channels TV, delegates from seventeen states in the country voted for national officers during the convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Turaki was elected as the new chairman.
A total of 1,516 ballots were cast in favor of the ex-minister during the exercise, which took place at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
Reporting in second place with 275 votes was Senator Yakubu Danmarke, according to election supervisor Ben Obi.
While acknowledging the enormity of the task ahead, Turaki voiced confidence in the party’s new leadership and their ability to deliver in his acceptance address.
We will also bring it to the people of Nigeria, as the cross you have given us indicates that is your desire. We do not pretend to think that the assignment given to us is easy. We are at a crossroads as a party, but we are ready for whatever comes our way,” Turaki declared.
In addition, he promised that “very soon” they will reveal their guiding principles and the strategy they would use to implement them. As soon as we do that, we will be ready to go right into things.
In a sincere attempt to repay the trust placed in him by party members and supporters, Turaki promised to carry out his duties as party leader with integrity.
“As I speak to you today, the Peoples Democratic Party is the only political party that has retained its name,” he remarked. The people of Nigeria have made this possible by supporting this party. There can be no doubt; we are bringing the celebration back to you, the people. No more slack-jawed behavior.
The convention began yesterday, Saturday, November 15, and continued into the early hours of Sunday 16 . More than three thousand delegates were present, representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
