On suspicion of engaging in internet fraud, three individuals from Nigeria were apprehended in Mwea Town, Kenya’s Mwaliko Estate.
According to a report from the Kenyan digital news outlet Tuko News, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The three people apprehended are Nnalue Chiagozie Samwe, Alazor Chukulute Sunday, and Peter Chukwujekwu.
The three were reportedly forced out of their apartment yesterday after neighbors complained of strange goings-on in the building during the wee hours of the morning.
The arrests were made during “a multi-agency raid targeting a cyber fraud ring” in the area, according to the DCI, who confirmed the news.
“Three Nigerian nationals nabbed in Kirinyaga multi-agency raid,” the DCI said, according to the story. The suspected cyber fraud ring run by three Nigerian nationals was uncovered in a well-coordinated multi-agency search in Mwaliko Estate within Mwea town.
The accused allegedly lacked proper work permits and were living in Kenya unlawfully while posing as online business owners.
This arrest adds to the growing number of Nigerians being taken into custody overseas for a range of illicit operations, such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and cyber fraud.
Nineteen Nigerians were taken into custody by the Nairobi police in June 2023 on charges of committing cyber fraud against Kenyans.
The DCI claims that the individuals, who ranged in age from 19 to 33, conned naive Kenyans using social media to offer them international goods delivery services.
“The con artists will approach you on Facebook with a friend request. Once you accept, they will start a casual conversation in which they offer the victim free airport goodies sent by DHL,” the DCI added.
