Super Eagles held to draw by Zimbabwe

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Warriors of Zimbabwe played to a 1-1 draw today in their second World Cup qualifying match at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda.

After last Thursday’s disappointing stalemate against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, the Super Eagles were under intense scrutiny and needed a win badly, as reported by Channels TV.

Not the best of starts, as Zimbabwe’s Musona scored in the 26th minute off a free kick from 30 yards out, beating Nigeria’s shot stopper Francis Uzoho.

Even with Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi on the pitch, the 2013 AFCON champions were unable to assert themselves, with Zimbabwe taking the lead at halftime.

Halftime saw Jose Peseiro make three substitutions, with Ola Oina, Onyeka, and Nathan Tella being replaced by Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Osayi-Samuel.

Iheanacho scored an equaliser for the Super Eagles in the 67th minute to give Peseiro’s team a share of the points.

Nigeria kept pushing forward in the dying minutes of the game, but the Warriors’ defence held firm.
