Breaking News : Nigeria Labour declares nationwide strike Next week
Effective next Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a nationwide total strike.
Channels TV reports that the resolution was reached by the leadership of the two unions following an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting today in Abuja.
The two largest labour unions have announced that immediate mobilisation of members and associates across the nation has commenced.
The Organised Labour action was in retaliation for the ruthless imprisonment of Joe Ajaero, national president of the NLC, in Imo State last week.
The Organised Labour’s allegation that Mohammed Barde, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, was complicit in the recent assault on Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, had generated widespread indignation.
The Organised Labour issued a five-day ultimatum to the federal government last Friday, demanding that the police commissioner be replaced. Additionally, the organisation accused the re-election-seeking governor, Hope Uzodimma, of the assault on Ajaero, despite the governor subsequently denying any involvement in the incident.
Additionally, some of the governor’s aides were arrested and prosecuted at the behest of Organised Labour, which threatened to initiate a nationwide industrial strike if its demands were not met.
Already, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun redeployed Barde on Sunday, November 11, 2023, for the sake of “neutrality” in advance of the governorship election in Imo State.
